Salvador Dalí  (Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, 1904-1989)
The most famous surrealist painter, born 11.05.1904 at 8:45 a.m. in the town of Figueres, in Catalonia, Spain to a family of a middle-class lawyer and notary. Started painting already as a child, and in 1921 entered Academia de San Fernando in Madrid, yet was expelled in 1926. His first exhibition was opened 14.11.1925 in Barcelona (27 paintings, 5 drawings). In 1927, arrives in Paris, joins a surrealist group and, in collaboration with Luis Buñuel, makes the film Un chien andalou. In 1929, Gala (an emigrant from Russia, Elena Ivanovna Diakonova) comes to visit SD in Spain, and remains his muse, model and manager till the end of her days in 1982.

In 1929, SD organizes the first exhibition of surrealist paintings, becomes infatuated with Sigmund Freud's ideas, delivers lectures in Europe and the USA. In 1940, moves to the USA, lives in NY and California, puts on theatre and ballet plays, makes adornments and garments, publishes a fictitious biography The Secret Life of Salvador Dali (1942), paints a series inspired by the atomic bomb, designs the dream sequence in Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound (1945). In 1948 he returns in Cadaqués, in 1948 receives benediction from the Pope Pius XII. In 1950-1960's SD paints portraits, religious and erotic themes, illustrates the Bible a.o. books and, in coopeartion with Philippe Halsman, publishes a book Dali’s Moustache (1954). Due to SD cult status, the world art market gets crammed with frauds. In Figueres, SD opens his own theatre-museum (1974) and establishes a fund for preservation of his heritage (1983). In 1982, King Juan Carlos of Spain bestowes on Dalí the title Marquis of Púbol and awards him The Great Cross of Isabel the Catholic.
