Sergei Ovcharov (Cергей Овчаров, 1955)
Director and scriptwriter, born 29.04.1955 in Rostov-on-Don, Russia.
Graduated from the Moscow State Institute of Culture (1976, Grigory Roshal master class), the Advanced Directing and Scriptwriting           
Course in Moscow (1979, Gleb Panfilov master class). Since 1979, director at the film studio Lenfilm. Author of over 30 scripts for educational films, commercials, short films and full-length features. Master of the eccentric cinema, based on folklore traditions. Scriptwriter for all his films. Since 1981, a nominee and laureate of several IFF: film Pharaoh (1998) received the Golden Bear as the Best Short at the Berlin IFF (1999), Drumroll (1993) – Special Jury Award at the Moscow IFF, Grand Prix at the Tbilisi IFF, a.o.
Animation film Sochinushki (2000) was nominated for the Golden Palm at the Cannes IFF as the Best Short.
SO works at the studio Proline–film, he is a professor at the St.Petersburg State University of Cinema and Television, head of animation workshops, delivers lectures on fiction films and computer design. Has been a director and scene-designer at the Taganka Theatre in Moscow. Bearer of the titlr of Honoured artist (1994).
His films have been screened at the Arsenāls IFF since 1986, all in all 6 times. His film Orchard (2008, after Anton Chekhov’s play The Cherry Orchard) was screened at the Arsenāls IFF ’08 closing ceremony and received the Special Award of the Arsenāls IFF.
